Palm Wireless Database Server Now
Being Shipped to Corporate Customers
Palm announced that it is
now shipping the Wireless Database Access Server (WDBAS) to
corporate customers, marking the launch of the second tier of its
enterprise strategy – the first being the release of the Palm i705
wireless device.
With WDBAS, developers can use familiar development platforms,
such as Metrowerks and AppForge, to create wireless applications
that access corporate databases in real-time. Remote workers could
use any Palm- or PocketPC-enabled device to access applications
including sales force automation, e-commerce, enterprise resource
planning, supply chain management, and customer relationship
management.
The hallmark of the WDBAS is its smart-client approach: a cross
between traditional sync- and browser-based wireless applications. A
synch application provides a synchronized snapshot of archival data
maintained on the device, while a browser application delivers
real-time information wirelessly within a specified coverage area.
The Santa Clara, CA-based company said its smart client approach
lets developers build an application that can access previously
stored data while offline as well as real-time corporate data.
Features of WDBAS
- Pre-fab components, allow developers to build or integrate
wireless data-driven applications more quickly.
- Compatible with leading databases, including Oracle, IBM DB2,
Microsoft SQL Server, and Sybase.
- End-to-end security, includes Certicom’s encryption
libraries and SSL for basic Internet security.
