Verizon Wireless Expands High-Speed Wireless Internet Service

Since its initial launch in January, Verizon Wireless’ high-speed wireless service, Express Network, has received "overwhelming positive feedback" from users, said vice president John Stratton, encouraging the carrier to expand into 13 additional markets. The service is now available to 33 percent of its 29 million subscribers.

The company said, as of April 1st, users in Buffalo and Rochester, NY; Pittsburgh, PA; Chicago, ILL; St. Louis, MO; Dallas and Houston, TX; Portland, ORE, and cites in Florida including Tampa, Miami, West Palm Beach, Lakeland and Key West can now access the service.

The service was initially rolled out in areas from Boston to Virginia on the East Coast, and Silicon Valley, Salt Lake City and the San Francisco Bay area in the West.

Express Network uses Qualcomm’s CDMA2000 1X technology, which promises subscribers always-on high-speed Internet, with transmission speeds of up to 144 kbps. Typically users can access the Internet, corporate intranets and traditional e-mail at speeds of 40 to 60 kbps.

Business and individual consumers can access Express Network with the Verizon Wireless 2235 handset from Kyocera and compatible Mobile Office kit used as a modem for their laptops, or by using the AirCard 555 PC card from Sierra Wireless for their laptops and selected PDAs.

The Bedminster, NJ-based firm said it plans to roll out the new service in more cities next month, making it available to more than 50 percent of its subscribers.

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: CDMA 1XRTT network is a fair improvement over existing 2G wireless networks.
