AMD Goes Head-to-Head with Intel
Determined not to let rival
Intel, with its recently introduced PXA250, dominate the emerging
mobile chip market, AMD has launched its first handheld device chip,
the Alchemy Au1100 processor.
The Sunnyville, CA-based company is touting the Au1100, which is
currently being sampled, as a high-performance chip for devices with
low power requirements, such as PDAs, web pads, and telematics. It
will support devices based on Window CE. NET, Linux and VxWorks, but
Palm OS is notably missing from its line-up.
AMD’s new processor runs at 400 MHz and uses half the power of
the current Au1000 processor. The Au1100 integrates with a LCD
controller that enables high quality video on mobile devices. In
addition, the chip features two Secure Digital controllers, enabling
use of small portable data storage devices. It also has a built-in
Ethernet interface.
The processor was developed by Alchemy Semiconductor, which AMD
acquired in February.

MobileInfo.com’s Comments &
Advisory: More efficient processors from Intel and AMD will help
because future PDAs need all the help they can get in terms of battery
consumption.
