Broadcom Acquires Mobilink to
Expand Wireless Presence
Broadcom, a provider of
chipsets for such products as high-speed modems, satellite receivers
and local area wireless communications, has acquired Mobilink, a
specialist in GSM and GPRS chips, software and terminal solutions,
for $260-million.
The acquisition will usher Broadcom into the cellular, design and
software markets, said Dr. Henry T. Nicholas, III, Broadcom’s
president and CEO.
The acquisition of Mobilink "represents an important
strategic step for our company, one that will not only allow us to
provide wide area roaming capability over the digital cellular
networks, but also enhance synergies with our best-in-class products
for enterprise 802.11b wireless networks and short range wireless
links over Bluetooth connections," he said.
By merging Mobilink’s expertise in 2G and 2.5G cellular
technologies with its own commitment to Bluetooth and 802.11
technologies, Broadcom is looking to strengthen its converged mobile
communications strategy.
Leveraging Mobilink's expertise will place Broadcom in a
"unique position to provide products that enable wireless
voice, video and data connectivity while in the home, on the road,
and in the office," Dr. Nicholas said.
