3G Data, Wireless Data-Only
Network Technology Passes Test
COM DEV Broadband said it
has successfully deployed its M/ERGY system to deliver the first 3G
broadband wireless data-only network in North America.
Comprising of four base stations, a core network controller and
subscriber access terminals, the M/ERGY system is now being tested
by Monet Mobile Networks in Manhattan, Kansas.
Based on the CDMA2000 1xEV-DO standard, COM DEV’s system can
deliver transmission speeds of up to 2.4 Mbps.
COM DEV’s M/ERGY system is now commercially available for
deployment within existing 1900 or 800 MHz spectrum, said Derek
Prada, vice president of Marketing and Sales, COM DEV.
"Customers will eventually be able to access the Internet at
speeds averaging 10 to 50 times faster than dial-up, at an
affordable price, in markets that are predominantly underserved by
cable modem and DSL," he added.

MobileInfo.Com’s Comments & Advisory: It is interesting
that COM DEV has embarked on a wireless data only 3G network.
Unfortunately, business case for such a network is weak. You do need
base capacity of a 3G network to be used for voice subscribers. May be
in about 24 months, this will become viable.
