Compaq Enters its Handhelds in
Boston Marathon
Besides over a hundred of
its employees taking part, as runners or volunteers, in the 106th
Boston Marathon, Compaq Computer Corporation’s iPAQ PocketPCs,
along with Nextel Communications’ modems, will be participating in
this historic race.
Compaq is responsible for the implementation of a wireless
computer network that will allow spectators to track their favorite
runners and wheelchair participants along the 26.2-mile route.
Components of the Wireless Network
- Twenty-two Compaq iPAQ PocketPCs
- Wireless modems from Next Communications
- Compaq Athlete Search System
The Compaq Athlete Search System requires all participants to
attach tiny computer chips to their shoes or wheelchairs. Each time
they cross one of the stationary sensor mats located at regular
checkpoints along the course, their location and time will be
transmitted to the system.
By entering the participant’s name or bib number, any one of
the 22 Compaq volunteers equipped with an iPAQ handheld device can
provide spectators with instant up-dates of their favorite athlete.
Participant updates will also be accessible from the event’s
Web site, allowing computer users around the world to track the
progress of each participant.
When commenting on the success of the wireless system, John
Ardini, vice president for Solutions Development in Compaq’s High
Performance Systems Division, said, "This technology is a great
way for friends and family members to follow their favorite
participant and feel like they’re part of the action."
"The Compaq system, which has been used at the annual Compaq
Houston Marathon as well as the Boston Marathon, has become a huge
hit with fans," he added.
