Compaq’s iPAQ H3870 First with
Built-in Bluetooth Connectivity
Compaq’s has just released
its iPAQ H3870 handheld device, which is being touted as the first
PDA to have built-in Bluetooth connectivity.
Hidden in the black, plastic protrusion above the display screen,
the Bluetooth radio enables users to exchange data wirelessly
between compatible Bluetooth-enabled gadgets, such as Ericsson’s
T68 cell phone and HP’s DeskJet 995C printer, within a 30-foot
range
Except for its short-range connectivity feature, the H3870 is
identical to Compaq’s H3835.
Specifications for H3870 and H3835
- PocketPC 2002 OS
- 206 MHz Intel StrongARM processor
- 64 MB of RAM
- 32 MB of ROM
- Color reflective TFT LCD, 65,000 colors
- Handwriting recognition, soft keyboard, voice record and
inking input methods
For enterprise users, the H3870 is bundled with third party
applications, such as the Insignia Java Virtual Machine and
data-encryption software as well as a File Store application for
storing critical data, up to 6 MB, in ROM. Even if the device’s
batteries are completely drained, the data stored in ROM will not be
lost.

Bluetooth in iPAQ will make it more versatile. We can see a number of
applications where this would be a handy feature.
