City of Gothenburg Launches Wireless Services to Employees With Technology From Columbitech & IBM that secures access to Lotus Domino environment

STOCKHOLM - April 10, 2002- The City of Gothenburg, in the southern part of Sweden, has for several years had a vision to provide mobile and wireless services to its employees. Today, the vision is put into practice since part of the staff are offered secure mobile access to their Lotus Domino accounts through their WAP-phones. This means that the user can access and use functions such as email, calendar and contact databases through their mobile
phones without compromising security. The technical solution is delivered by Swedish software developer Columbitech and IBM. By installing parts of Columbitech Wireless Suite directly on the Domino Everyplace Access Server (DEAS), a secure connection to the Domino-server is created. The demand for
strong security increases as we see more WAP-users as a result of the GPRS launch in the fall of 2001.

"Wireless technology is a great tool to streamline work processes, but we cannot accept streamlining at the expense of security. Therefore, we choose a security solution providing end-to-end security directly on our existing applications," said Lars Arvidsson, IT Manager, City of Gothenburg. "Columbitech WAP Connector is a good choice when securing IBM DEAS," said Lars Dahlberg, Channel Sales Manager, IBM Sweden Columbitech WAP Connector eliminates the so-called "gap in WAP" which is a security hole, by creating a secure encrypted tunnel from the WAP terminal all the way into the company's Domino server. Benefits gained by using DEAS and Columbitech WAP Connector is that you can administrate your own WAP-solution eliminating the need for an operator-hosted gateway meanwhile
you don't have to acquire any additional hardware.  "IBM is an ideal partner for Columbitech since IBM can contribute with a great deal of technical knowledge as well as a world-wide organization. And
I am delighted that the City of Gothenburg chosen Columbitech's solution since they are known to set high demands on security," said Pontus Bergdahl, CEO Columbitech

About Columbitech

MobileInfo.com’s Comments & Advisory: Columbitech has core expertise in securing wireless networks. Their approach in securing wireless networks from end to end is a good one. Association with IBM in providing this solution to the city of Gothenburg should help Columbitech in getting more recognition for its approach and products.
