NTTDoCoMo Loses on Foreign
Investments
The poor performance of
NTTDoCoMo’s foreign affiliates has forced the carrier to recognize
a loss for the fiscal year ending March 2002.
In recent years, the company has made a number of strategic
investments in foreign telecoms, including British Hutchison 3G,
American AT&T Wireless and Taiwanese KG Telecommunications, in
an effort to expand the adoption of its technology platforms, i-mode
and W-CDMA.
The lucrative returns, however, did not materialize, forcing
DoCoMo to report a loss on investments of YEN 550-billion
($4.15-billion). Among its oversea investments, AT&T Wireless
was the hardest hit, losing YEN 506-billion ($3.81-billion); DoCoMo
holds a 16 percent stake in the American carrier.
The carrier also amended its operating revenue forecast for the
fiscal year ending March 31, 2002 from a profit of YEN 255-billion
($1.92-billion) to a loss of YEN 36-million ($271.31-million).

MobileInfo.Com’s Comments & Advisory: Nobody, not
even NTT DoCoMo, is immune to disappointing financial numbers in our
industry. Wireless network companies have to go back to the old
business investment expectations – recover your costs over a long
period of time.
