ACQUISITIONS, MERGERS & AGREEMENTS

Wireless LAN Technologies Attracting Investors

Even as the global economy shows signs of recovery, investors are still leaning on the side of caution, especially in the telecommunications and high-tech sectors. Yet one area that has attracted attention is the wireless local networking market. Recently, two wireless LAN vendors, RadioFrame Networks of Redmond, WA, and Magis Networks of San Diego, CA, have announced strategic investments.

RadioFrame Networks Inc.
The Redmond, WA-based company said it has received $15-million in third-round funding. Ericsson Venture Partners kicked in $8-million, the company confirms, and other investors include Nextel Communications, Orange Ventures and Ignition, a venture capital firm specializing in the wireless sector.

RadioFrame offers in-building wireless coverage with a mini cell site running both wireless voice and data as well as high-speed wireless LAN technologies on one platform. The system supports legacy standards and emerging wireless technologies such as Bluetooth and 802.11b.

Magis Networks, Inc.
Magis Networks, a maker of 802.11a-compliant wireless chipsets, said Matsushita Electronic Components, best known for its Panasonic electronic components, has made a strategic investment in its future. Matsushita joins Hitachi, Motorola, Sanyo, Vulcan, Bay Partners and Crescendo Ventures in Magis’ current round of funding.

Magis develops 802.11a chipsets, under the Air5 brand, that enable wireless communications of TCP/IP data, high-quality video and audio throughout the home and office.

Under the terms of the investment, the two companies intend to jointly develop and promote wireless networking products, and push Air5 as an industry standard.
