Two Wireless Carriers Confident About 3G Services

Two wireless carriers, Verizon Wireless of the U.S. and H3G SpA of Italy, are confident that their subscribers are ready for high-speed data wireless services.

Verizon Wireless
Since its initial launch in January, Verizon Wireless’ high-speed wireless service, Express Network, has received "overwhelming positive feedback" from users, said vice president John Stratton, encouraging the carrier to expand into 13 additional markets. The service is now available to 33 percent of its 29 million subscribers.

The company said, as of April 1st, users in Buffalo and Rochester, NY; Pittsburgh, PA; Chicago, ILL; St. Louis, MO; Dallas and Houston, TX; Portland, ORE, and cites in Florida including Tampa, Miami, West Palm Beach, Lakeland and Key West can now access the service.

Express Network uses Qualcomm’s CDMA2000 1X technology, which promises subscribers always-on high-speed Internet, with transmission speeds of up to 144 kbps. Typically users can access the Internet, corporate intranets and traditional e-mail at speeds of 40 to 60 kbps.

Business and individual consumers can access Express Network with the Verizon Wireless 2235 handset from Kyocera and compatible Mobile Office kit used as a modem for their laptops, or by using the AirCard 555 PC card from Sierra Wireless for their laptops and selected PDAs.

H3G SpA
Vincenzo Novari, president of H3G SpA, an Italian multimedia mobile operator, has confirmed that the company plans to launch 3G services in 50 cities in Italy by the end of the year. This will place H3G in an enviable position among other Italian UMTS players who will not commit to 3G until 2003 or 2004.

At present, 650 base stations are works-in-progress with another 2,000 base station applications awaiting approval.

H3G is backed by the Hong Kong-based conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa, which holds an 88.2 percent stake in the company.
