Toronto Blue Jays Turn to Wireless
Wearable Computers
Toronto Blue Jays fans can
expect to be greeted by cyber attendants at the gate now that
Xybernaut, a provider of wearable mobile computing hardware, will be
providing its wearable mobile computers to the American League
franchise.
Ticketing and customer service representatives will don Xybernaut’s
Mobile Assistant V (MA V) wearable computers to sell tickets to fans
in and around the SkyDome, augmenting the existing ticket windows
and kiosks.
The mobile solution, which the team refers to as Cyber Selling,
is part of its marketing strategy, ‘Taking Baseball to the People,’
in an effort to boast attendance and reduce scalping.
The mobile solution involves equipping each customer service rep
with a wearable mobile computer configured with wireless
connectivity, a flat panel display, which is touch-screen enabled,
mobile credit card processing equipment and integrated with the team’s
existing databases for access to ticketing and other information.
Early in 2001, the Blue Jays began evaluating the mobile solution
to assess the ROI.
"Once we reviewed the results of the evaluation period, we
realized that many other operations could be enhanced by providing
access to critical data when and where our employees need it,"
explained Paul Allamby, senior vice president of marketing and sales
for the Blue Jays.
This includes an effort to reduce scalping. By purchasing tickets
from the team’s Cyber Selling agents, fans can be assured that
their ticket price will not be marketed up and their tickets are
authentic.
