Senior Executives Need Wireless
Education, survey says
Senior executives do not
understand the benefits of wireless technology, according to a
global survey of 650 senior executives conducted by Deloitte
Consulting.
Of the respondents, 51 percent do not understand the benefits and
uses of wireless technology, while 20 percent believe the technology
has not developed sufficiently for business yet. Deloitte says this
lack of understanding is the primary reason for its slow adoption.
The on-line survey revealed that while senior executives have
limited understanding of how their business could benefit from
wireless technology, 75 percent of the employees said they believe
their organization could benefit from the technology.
Impact of Wireless Tech in Business
- Only 30 percent said that wireless technology had a minor
impact within their organization.
- Over 93 percent of executives use wireless technology for
voice calls only.
- In four years, 51 percent of the respondents expect to be
using wireless PDAs; 49 percent, wireless LANs; and 44 percent,
wireless data for e-mail and information exchange.
When asked what companies need to do, Martin Dunsby, leader of
Deloitte Consulting’s global wireless initiative, said companies
need to identify how they can benefit from the technology and
"develop a top-down corporate policy on wireless", with
"employees choosing their wireless technology for work
purposes."
By doing so, corporations would realize that "they are not
only missing out on the benefits to be gained but could also be
courting unrecognized risk," he added.

MobileInfo.com’s Comments & Advisory: Deloitte's
survey findings are not much of a news to us. It confirms what was
obvious. Business automation strategists and planners must ring in
the dollars behind their wireless project plans. The industry must
solve its problems, demonstrate true business value and become more
credible before it gets their attention. Please note that we are
talking about enterprise wireless data (B2B and B2E) market.
