Cisco Introduces Aironet 1200
Series for Wireless Networks
Cisco Systems, Inc. has
launched the Cisco Aironet 1200 Series Access Point, an
enterprise-ready infrastructure that provides high performance,
investment protection and security.
According to Chris Kozup, senior research analyst for the Meta
Group, one of the key features of the Aironet 1200 Series is that,
in the rapidly evolving WLAN environment, it preserves customers’
investments in Wi-Fi networks by providing a seamless migration path
to 802.11a and emerging technologies such as 802.11g.
Cisco’s Aironet 1200 Series Access Point that includes an
802.11b radio, which can transmit and receive data at 11 Mbps, will
hit store shelves this month. In August, the company will release an
802.11a radio card, which can access the Internet at 54 Mbps, and a
dual-band version, with 802.11b and 802.11a radios. Next year, Cisco
plans to release an 802.11g version, which will be compatible with
the two older standards and will transmit data at speeds of up to 54
Mbps.

MobileInfo.com’s Comments & Advisory: We like
Cisco's product design in terms of future compatibility through
swapping a card. If Cisco swapped 802.11b cards with 802.11a cards,
it will be quite an idea. We are dreaming! Our understanding of site
design is that 802.11b and 802.11a access points have different
wireless coverage characteristics. Therefore, you need to redesign
the access point configuration - how many and where to locate them.
