GSM Association Forms Taskforce to
Energize GPRS Market
The GSM Association has
established a taskforce with the mandate to encourage the
development of applications for the GPRS market.
With many MMS trails underway, GSM operators and their suppliers
are looking to MMS to ignite the GPRS market. At the recent MMS
Summit Meeting, GSM operators had an opportunity to address key
challenges of MMS such as interoperability issues and the form in
which non-MMS capable handsets can receive a simplified form of MMS
from new-generation terminals.
According to the GSM Association’s chairman Scott Fox, the GSM
Association Taskforce undertook to "define a set of easy to use
services as a general base that will facilitate faster
implementation of a wider choice of commercial applications"
and services.
Besides MMS, operators identified the following services as being
critical to the uptake of GPRS:
- Location-Based Services, including Location Tracking, Point of
Interest and Road Traffic Assistance,
- Customer Information Service,
- Mobile Office Service and
- Unified Messaging.
With the services portfolio defined, the GSM Association said, it
will produce and publish Service Implementation Guides, which
collate all the information needed by an operator or vendor to
implement a specific service.

MobileInfo.com’s Comments & Advisory: This is
a laudable effort on the part of GSM Association. While we do need
concerted effort to develop affordable, we repeat, affordable MMS
applications, greater emphasis should be placed on matching prices
of GPRS-based MMS services to the value these services provide to
the consumer and the enterprise.
