RIM BlackBerry to Gain New Corporate Data Features,
Makes deals with Panasonic & Melard
Renowned for its 'always on' e-mail, Research in Motion's BlackBerry is now going to offer corporate users a new set of capabilities.
Currently, RIM is beta testing a new BlackBerry Enterprise Server feature called Mobile Data Service that will enable users access to corporate data, with interactive capabilities, without having to do anything except turn on their device.
The Mobile Data Service works in conjunction with the BlackBerry browser and BlackBerry Development Environment for Java to provide an optimized platform for mobile applications running on advanced wireless packet-data networks, the company said.
For ISPs and in-house corporate developers, the Mobile Data Service provides standards-based connectivity via the BlackBerry infrastructure, including support for HTTP, TCP/IP and UDP protocols. This minimizes the need for developers to learn or apply new connectivity techniques and allows new or existing corporate applications to be easily extended to BlackBerry handhelds.
The Waterloo, Ontario, company did not disclose when the new features would be available.
In addition, the company announced that both Panasonic Computer Solutions Co. and Melard Technologies, Inc. have selected its radio modems for GSM/GPRS to wirelessly enable their ruggedized handheld computers.

MobileInfo.com’s Comments & Advisory: RIM
continues to be the preferred solution of choice for corporate e-mail.
This enhancement effort will help it in developing more
line-of-business applications like sales force automation, customer
service, field force dispatch, and more. RIM must stay ahead of the
pack because Palm's i705 is trying furiously to gain ground in the
enterprise market. We suggest that RIM should pay some attention to
consumer applications that corporate professionals would like to
access e.g. Global Dining's restaurant access directory application.
It does not require any technical enhancement - just a rearrangement
of menu and a business arrangement.
