Sprint Releases an Enterprise-Class Instant Messaging Platform

Sprint's has announced its enterprise-class instant messaging platform, which ensures user interoperability regardless of device or network.

Sprint Enterprise IM, now available as a managed hosting platform or a corporate IM solution wholly contained inside the firewall, provides a highly secure communications tool that enables seamless conversing between the desktop and handheld devices.

"Sprint's Enterprise IM can tie together all of a company's communications devices, from desktop to wireless devices, and allows important messages to be communicated at the time when they are most important," said Keith Paglusch, president of Sprint E Solutions.

"The benefit of IM as a business communications tool is that it can control the explosion of e-mails every professional is challenged with managing," he added.

The Sprint Enterprise Instant Messaging

  • Uses Java 2 Micro Edition 2 (J2ME) to support Presence that allows corporate users to see which colleagues are on-line and able to receive messages, and Status that enables notifications to be sent over wireline and wireless networks.
  • Supports current 2G technologies, WAP and SMS.
  • Uses limited bandwidth.
  • Provides standard SSL encryption.

MobileInfo.com’s Comments & Advisory: This is a very good initiative on the part of Sprint to maintain its lead in the wireless data market as the most-focused  (not the largest)  wireless service provider.  Sprint should move ahead of the pack with integration of IM with SMS for those who are not in the closed group.
