Vocera Communications Secures $12-Million
in Third Round for New Wireless Application
Vocera Communications, a company specializing in wireless network-based software and hardware systems, has secured $12-million in its third round of funding. The round was led by Venrock Associates with additional funding provided by RRE Ventures, Vanguard Ventures, Avalon Ventures, and IDEO.
The Cupertino, California, company is creating a new wireless application to enable instant communications for mobile professionals.
"Given the current investment climate," said Julie Shimer, CEO of Vocera Communications, "this round of funding signals high confidence in our company from the investment community. The additional funds will be used to complete product development and grow the organization."
Vocera technicians are developing a wireless platform that provides hands-free, voice-activated communications throughout any 802.11b-networked building or campus. The Vocera Communications System consists of Vocera Server Software, residing on a customer premise server, and Vocera Communications Badges, which operate over a wireless LAN. With simple voice commands, Vocera instantly connects the user to colleagues or work groups.
The system is designed to meet the needs of mobile personnel in hospitals, retail operations, and other in-building environments. The system will be available in the fall of 2002.

MobileInfo.com’s Comments & Advisory: This is
a good application space to fund - it is in the early stages of
development. We generally like how Vocera is planning to deliver the
functionality. Just deliver the goods, please before Cisco, Symbol
and Mitel beat you out of this game. Keep the server and
communications badge affordable.
