Two Vendors Showcase Wireless LAN Monitoring Systems
Network Associates and Agere
Systems are two companies that have recently introduced network
management solutions that promise to pinpoint and resolve common
security and performance breakdowns on wireless LANs.
Network Associates’ Sniffer Portable Wireless PDA
Network Associates has announced the latest version of its
Sniffer products — Sniffer Portable Wireless PDA that currently
runs on the Compaq iPAQ.
For corporate IT departments, the Wireless PDA option offers a
balance of the most essential wireless security and network
management features for collection and analysis of traffic on
wireless networks. Network technicians can immediately perform
initial data collection, analysis, and resolution of security and
availability issues such as rogue access points and radio frequency
interference.
The company said the Sniffer Portable Wireless PDA allows network
professionals to efficiently and effectively architect, develop and
manage a secure and reliable 802.11b-based wireless environment
while remaining cost-effective.
Agere Systems’ Wireless LAN Manager
Agere Systems said its network management product Wireless LAN
Manager is ideal for monitoring and managing an entire wireless LAN
infrastructure consisting of hundreds or even thousands of access
points spread out over multiple facilities.
With Wireless LAN Manager, IT technicians can recognize problems
before they are reported. It allows technicians to control, update
and configure an entire network from a single user interface.
Agere’s network management solution can easily be integrated
with HP OpenView, the mainstream management platform for wired
networks. When used with OpenView, the Wireless LAN Manager provides
a topographical view of the entire wireless network and can provide
graphical monitoring of real-time data from selected devices. IT
managers can see the entire network and view all devices on the same
subnet by Auto Discovery or by IP addresses.
According to Larry Gallagher, manager of data communications at
Cambridge Mellon University, "We have over 600 access points on
our network and using the Wireless LAN Manager has been a huge
benefit."
