Singapore Pushes For a World
Without Wires
As part of its Wired with Wireless
Initiative, the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, a body
that regulates and promotes the communications industry in
Singapore, has awarded a total of 26 consortia to conduct trials of
proposed solutions for a mobile workforce or for the development of
wireless Java applications.
Those awarded placements had responded to the Initiative’s Call
for Collaborations.
Twenty consortia will conduct trials of solutions enabling a
mobile workforce. Theses solutions will take advantage of the
mobility offered by wireless technologies for personal information
management, sales force automation, field force automation, supply
chain management, resource planning and remote monitoring.
The total value of the workforce program is $16-million, of which
the IDA will contribute up to $6.5-million.
The remaining six awards were made to encourage the development
of commercially viable wireless Java applications and services.
Total value of the Wireless Java program is $1.8-million, of which
the IDA will contribute up to $700,000.
The IDA’s Wired with Wireless Program was established to
jumpstart the wireless industry in Singapore and to position the
country as a living lab and business catalyst for wireless
development in Asia. The program is aimed at developing the entire
wireless value chain, from infrastructure developers and access
service providers to content creators and aggregators.
