Nextel Touts Faster Wireless Access to Web
The fifth largest wireless operator in the U.S. Nextel Communications said that its new data compression solution will allow mobile professionals access to Internet content and enterprise applications at two-to-five times the current speed - averaging 30 kbps and peaking at 75 kbps, and beyond.
The Reston, VA.-based operator also introduced the iM1100 wireless modem, which plugs into any Microsoft-based laptop or PDA with a Type II PCMCIA card slot. The modem supports both a direct connection to the Internet using Nextel's Packet Data Network and a dial-up link via a standard circuit data connection.
For the mobile professional, the iM1100 modem is ideal for accessing corporate intranets and back-office systems, such as sales force automation, order entry, inventory tracking, and customer relationship management, the company said.
Nextel offers unlimited data service at a fixed rate.

MobileInfo.com’s Comments & Advisory: We like
Nextel's use of compression software server as a method of improving
performance of wireless networks. We have evaluated many of these
compression packages and feel that they should give varying levels of
throughput improvement on 2 G, 2.5G and even 3G networks. Many network
providers are unnecessarily wary of these compression packages. We
think that when you consider the cost of introducing these
improvements and the benefits in performance improvement, there is a
clear business case. Therefore, we want to compliment Nextel in taking
this step.
