BEA Systems & PwC Consulting Develop OSS App. Infrastructure Solution for Communication  Service Providers

Solution Targets Mobile Field Service Maintenance Needs Of Telecommunications Companies

May 22 -- BEA Systems, Inc. and the PwC Consulting(TM) business of PricewaterhouseCoopers today announced that the two organizations will jointly develop field service maintenance solutions for communications service providers using BEA's WebLogic Enterprise Platform(TM) as the underlying application infrastructure software.

The field service maintenance solution currently under development uses industry-standard OSS through Java (Initiative OSS/J) Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), which will provide greater flexibility and interoperability for carriers, as well as reduced cost of integration and maintenance. In addition, through the incorporation of location aware mobility technology, carriers will be able to reduce the workforce required to support field services while improving productivity.

The collaboration between BEA and PwC Consulting is the latest enhancement to PwC Consulting's New World Networks (NWN) initiative, developed to help established and emerging telecommunications companies bring new products and services to market efficiently, by providing a "plug-and-play" infrastructure to support a company's specific service offerings. PwC Consulting's NWN solution encompasses integrated, end-to-end business support systems (BSS) and operational support systems (OSS) that include order management, service provisioning, billing, customer care and other critical business functions-for both wireline and wireless communication service providers.

"Service providers around the globe require flexible solutions that will help them bring new products and services to their customers in accelerated time frames. Without a properly deployed mobile field service component, our clients would be hindered in these efforts," said Warwick Hill, PwC Consulting partner and global leader of the NWN initiative. "PwC Consulting and BEA share a common vision to address immediate business issues with technology so our clients can focus on core competencies -- bringing advanced communication products and services to an extremely competitive and fast-moving marketplace."

"This initiative adds to the many industry and horizontal solutions that BEA and PwC Consulting are delivering to our joint clients," said John Gray, vice president of worldwide alliances at BEA. "Bringing our respective strengths in the telecommunications market, BEA and PwC Consulting can provide the industry with a tailored solution for both telco leaders and emerging players looking to establish a place in the market."

Premised on Java technology, the BEA WebLogic Enterprise Platform is designed to ease integration between disconnected applications and systems, streamlining interaction between employees, customers and trading partners. By reducing integration time in both project implementation and system management, BEA's standardized platform can help customers lower integration costs, alleviate ongoing support expenses and accelerate time to market. Additionally, the use of OSS/J APIs enables easier, faster deployment of these applications through the integration of compliant products.

MobileInfo.com’s Comments & Advisory: BCC (Billing and Customer) and provisioning of services are important areas in efficient management of carriers' operations. While this is understood by the carriers, they are in survival mode and finding it difficult to spend capital dollars. We think that carriers should not cut their own foot.  BEA logic platform for developing these applications is pretty good.
