MARKET OUTLOOK & TRENDS

CDMA Subscribers Surpass 120 Million

The CDMA Development Group has announced that the number of wireless subscribers dependent on CDMA technology has surpassed 120 million worldwide in the first three months of this year. This represents an increase of 30 million, or 33 percent, in the last twelve months.

Latest CDMA Subscriber Data

  • Of the 120 million subscribers, close to eight million were using CDMA2000 1X, the standard’s 3G technology.
  • CDMA2000 subscribers accounted for more than 98 percent of the total number of 3G subscribers worldwide.
  • The largest subscriber base was in North America, with nearly 53 million users, representing more than 60 percent of the total number of wireless users in the region.
  • Asia ranked second with 44 million subscribers.
  • Latin America placed third with more than 22 million subscribers, representing a jump of 39 percent within a year.

Commenting on the data, Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG, said, "CDMA continues to expand rapidly around the world and is leading in 3G adoption. The upcoming months look very promising for CDMA, and we expect to see a significant increase in subscribers with the continued commercial deployment of 3G CDMA2000 services."

MobileInfo.com’s Comments & Advisory:  CDMA does offer spectrally-efficient technology as compared to GSM/GPRS. But GSM/GPRS did do a superior job of standardization. We would like the two camps to offer roaming across the two technologies by developing multi-mode handsets (GPRS and 1xRTT) and enhancements to the base stations so that same handset could function across the two networks. There are technological and economical challenges but they are not insurmountable.
