Americans Embracing Wireless
Lifestyle, CTIA says
The Cellular
Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA) has released
its year-end 2001 data survey that shows Americans are embracing the
wireless lifestyle.
Tom Wheeler, president and CEO of CTIA, said the survey
illustrates how wireless has become part of the American way of
life. "Wireless phones are used today more than ever – for
convenience, for productivity and for safety. An important leap
forward is wireless data – last year analysts predicted we would
see half a billion dollars in wireless data revenue in 2002. Not
only did we beat that, but we did it a year early."
Highlights of the CTIA 2001 Survey
- Total service revenues jumped from $27.8-billion in 2000 to
$34.1-billion in 2001, representing a 22.6 percent increase.
- Data revenue exceeded $500-million, in only its third year.
- Wireless invest up 17 percent, as wireless carriers reported
$105-billion in total cumulative capital investment.
- Americans used about 456 billion minutes on their mobile
phones, up 76 percent over 2000.
- There were 128.4 million wireless subscribers in December 2001
versus 109 million a year earlier, representing a 17 percent
increase.
- The number of digital subscribers reached 101 million, or 85
percent of all reported subscribers
