KDDI Japan Surpasses 3G Subscriber
Projections
Japan’s second largest
wireless carrier KDDI Japan has reported that it has surpassed its
initial projections by signing 334,000 third generation subscribers
in the first month.
When the CDMA2000 1X voice and data services were launched on
April 1St, 2002, KDDI Japan said that it expected to sign
280,000 subscribers by the end of month, and seven million by March
31, 2003.
"The response from our new 1X customers about the 3G data
services has been overwhelmingly positive," said Tadashi
Onodera, president of KDDI Corp.
The considerably faster data speeds, with a peak rate of up to
153 kbps, offered by 1X technology will continue to attract new and
existing customers to KDDI, remarked Simon Leung, corporate vice
president, Motorola’s Global Telecom Solutions Sector, which
supplied the infrastructure technology.
Motorola built its CDMA2000 1X architecture upon existing 2G or
2.5G networks by adding packet-based network elements, which
included the access node from Cisco Systems, Inc. that enables the
radio access network to be Internet protocol capable.

MobileInfo.com’s Comments & Advisory: This is
impressive but what we are waiting to get a handle on is - how many
data users and how much data these subscribers will use. Voice-only
subscribers on 3G is no brainer.
