KDDI Will Test High-Speed CDMA
Standard
In response to increasing
demand for data transmission services, Japanese wireless telecoms
KDDI Corp. and Okinawa Cellular said they will conduct further
trials of CDMA2000 1xEV DO (1x Evolution-Data Only), an IMT-2000
high-speed third generation wireless data service. It operates at a
frequency of 2GHz and can transmit data at speeds of up to 2.4 Mbps.
Trials will not begin until April 2003, but KDDI said it expects
the system to be ready for commercial release in October 2003, with
further expansion in March 2004.
KDDI began as early as July of 2000 testing the performance of
CDMA2000 1xEV DO for the 2GHz frequency. KDDI decided to move
forward with the system after the results demonstrated the system to
be capable and technically mature and able to respond to the
changing environment for Internet connectivity such as the spread of
high-speed Internet connections, namely ADSL.
Based on the results from the upcoming trial service, which will
be conducted just outside of Tokyo, KDDI said it expects to optimize
systems and terminals for use on a corporate-wide scale and for
various user environments to create a full-scale system that meets
users’ needs.

MobileInfo.com’s Comments & Advisory: Japan
again leads the rest of the world. While Sprint and others are just
completing their 1xRTT CDMA networks, these folks are moving ahead
with the next level of CDMA technology.
