NTTDoCoMo Unveils 504i Handset
Series
Japan’s largest wireless
operator NTTDoCoMo recently unveiled its advanced 504i series of
handsets: the D504i, F504i, and mova N504i.
The 504i series is the first group of PDC-based handsets
compatible with enhanced i-mode, offering packet data transmission
speeds of up to 28.8 kbps, three times faster than the original PDC-based
i-mode. They also support Java Archive (JAR) applications of up to
30 KB and associated data of up to 100 KB per application for rich
i-appli content. The conventional 503i model, by comparison,
supports JAR applications and data of up to 10 KB each.
The handsets are equipped with three-dimensional polygon engines
for 3D video display and are compatible with JPEG files as well as
32 ring tones. As a result, content providers can develop richer
content for i-appli, the Java-enabled i-mode service.
In a related announcement, the Japanese operator also released an
i-appli Java program development tool and technical material for the
504i mobile phone series.
The i-appli Java program development tool consists of an emulator
for i-appli and a tool for building it. The development tool will be
applicable to emulation of 2D animation as well as 3D graphics. Its
Java run-time environment requires Java2 SDK, Standard Edition
Version 1.3.1. The tool can be integrated with the Java development
environment ‘Forte for Java’ provided by Sun Microsystems.
In addition, the company released the ‘i-Appli Contents
Development Guide for 504i,’ which describes procedures for using
the new functions of 504i.
