Openwave Expands Business
Looking to expand its mobile
infrastructure software business, Openwave Systems has acquired
SignalSoft Corporation to move into the area of location-based
services software and has purchased mobile Java technology from
Ellipsus Systems to extend its download management solution.
SignalSoft Corporation
The Redwood City, California-based company acquired SignalSoft
for $59-million. According to Don Listwin, chairman, president and
CEO of Openwave, SignalSoft’s location-based technology will
"expand the richness and breadth of Openwave’s Multi Service
Platform and mobile messaging solutions."
The combination of Openwave’s expertise in the mobile Internet
and SignalSoft’s extensive portfolio of location-based services,
including Location Manager, a location gateway, and SafetyFirst, for
routing wireless 911 calls to public safety agencies, will provide a
broad industry solution for mobile operators looking to offer
revenue-generating and safety services.
Ellipsus Systems
For $17.5-million, Openwave purchased technology from Ellipsus
Systems to extend its download management solution to include the
delivery of Java applications including games and multimedia content
such as ring tones and images.
The enhanced download management software will enable mobile
operators to manage the complete content and service delivery value
chain, from content sourcing, digital rights management, pricing and
billing to the technical complexity of downloading to a myriad of
handset types, Openwave said.

MobileInfo.com’s Comments & Advisory: Openwave
is carefully and gradually moving away from its WAP-centric
infrastructure product services to a location-based middleware and
related services. We like Safety first feature of SignalSoft offering
to handle e911 calls.
