Old Dominion Freight Line Rolls
Out Wireless Solution
Aether Systems said that Old
Dominion Freight Line, Inc., a North Carolina-based transportation
company, has decided, after a successful trial run, to begin rolling
out Aether wireless service across its fleet of 1,700 trucks.
The solution incorporates components of Aether’s technology for
mobile data synchronization and runs on Windows CE-enabled Symbol
7500 handheld devices.
The wireless solution will provide the freight company with the
following:
- Proof of delivery
- On-demand notification
- Pick-up and delivery status/timing
- Over/short/damaged/emergency notification
- Cross-dock operations (allows for real-time outbound planning
and incoming goods)
Commenting on the benefits of the wireless solution, Terry
Hutchins, vice president of Field Services at Old Dominion Freight
Line, said, "This technology will allow us to provide more
expedient and real-time information to our customers. It will also
further enhance out ability to plan within our operational network.
We believe that planning and information is a driving factor in
being an efficient company across the board."

MobileInfo.com’s Comments & Advisory:
Wireless solutions offer a great deal to improve business processes in
freight and transportation industry where drivers are literally mobile. Many
of the large freight companies have installed solutions with a quick
payback, since early 90s. A number of vendors, including Aether Systems have
well-tested application solutions. Several in-expensive devices and network
options are available, including Blackberry from RIM. Simplest form of
implementation allows wireless messaging for real-time contact with drivers
- more advanced implementations involve real-time update of backend
databases from the truck. Dual-network (cellular and satellite) support
enables almost universal coverage. Therefore, we encourage all freight
companies to become more efficient by utilizing these solutions.
