South African Company Aims to Open
Up Airwaves to the Masses
Logotel Media Pty Ltd, based
in the Isle of Man and in Johannesburg, South Africa, is a young
company focused on offering value added services and products for
South African network operators.
The company’s latest product offering, a series of GSM
community phones, dubbed ‘Talk-2-Me,’ is designed for
entrepreneurs looking to get a foothold in the growing area of
community communications.
David Dugmore, director of Logotel Media, said, "It is no
secret that the hotspot for GSM in Africa is enabling services and
applications for communication in areas where the luxury of owning a
cellular handset is not affordable." This combined with the
fact that "network operators are committed to providing a
certain number of lines per year as per their operating
contracts" makes community phones very attractive, Dugmore
added.
Designed for applications in community settings, the Talk-2-Me
phone is a portable GSM device enabling up to four simultaneous
lines. The complete package includes the GSM-compatible device, a
controller briefcase, fixed-line handsets, and remote-display slave
units. In addition, remote management SIM locking, for security, is
possible on the unit.
Unlike some competitive offerings, Dugmore said, the Talk-2-Me
community phone is completely portable, taking only minutes to set
up.
The company expects Talk-2-Me to be adopted by private
businesses, phone shops, universities, and taxi companies.
Logotel Media said it has been approached by resellers and
individuals, both locally and abroad, and expects to deliver
up to 300 units per month.

MobileInfo.com’s Comments & Advisory:
Technology for portable GSM telephone systems that can be set up in minutes
is nothing new. Real issue is the business model and economic viability.
Therefore, we shall only await economic outcome of this unique effort. If it
succeeds in Africa, it has a huge potential in the developing world.
We wish them luck.
