4thpass Java Technology Attracts Siemens and Ericsson

Both Siemens and Ericsson have agreed to resell 4thpass Java technology, hoping to cash in on the growing demand among wireless carriers looking to launch mobile Java services.

German-based Siemens will sell the 4thpass Mobile Application System (MAS) to preferred carrier customers in Europe and Asia. In addition, Siemens will become a certified integrator of MAS.

Ericsson has also given the 4thpass MAS solution the red-stamp of approval, and will make the software available to carriers worldwide.

"Java technology is highly asked for in the mobile marketplace today," said Jan Lindgren, vice president of Mobile Internet Solutions Ericsson. "With the 4thpass MAS solution, operators will be able to turn Java innovations into a commercial success on existing networks and on future 3G networks."

MAS is a server-side software that lets carriers manage, filter, and deliver Java (J2ME) applications over the airwaves to mobile devices. The system’s application filtering technology inspects, or x-rays, the byte-code of applications to ensure they are safe for the carrier network and subscribers’ mobile devices. On the fly, MAS matches applications to mobile devices with different specifications and memory requirements. For added security, network operators can also use MAS to restrict how applications behave on a device.

With endorsements from Siemens and Ericsson, the Seattle, Washington, company says it expects to see wireless carriers readily adopt mobile Java services and consolidation in the competitive Java provisioning landscape.

4thpass MAS technology is currently licensed by LG TeleCom, Telefonica Moviles and Nextel.
