Boingo Wireless Looks to Expand
With Ready-Made Solution
Boingo Wireless, provider of
wireless high-speed Internet services, or Wi-Fi hotspots, across the
U.S. via its location partners, has announced its ready-made
solution for entrepreneurs looking to capitalize on the momentum of
Wi-Fi networks.
Boingo Wireless has launched its Boingo-Ready access points from
Colubris Networks that enable venue owners or WISPs to join Boingo’s
national network of Wi-Fi hotspots.
According to Boingo Wireless, entrepreneurs who order
Boingo-Ready access points and join the Boingo Wireless network can
generate revenues through connection fees and bounties paid for new
user sign-ups. They will also receive a Hot-Spot-in-a-Box marketing
kit, which includes all the promotional material needed to sell the
service.
Boingo Wireless is also making available its Hot-Spot-in-a-Box
specification, which defines a set of standards-based features for
gateways and access points to simplify integration with Boingo’s
network.
The Hot-Spot-in-a-box concept provides entrepreneurs with
"an easy on-ramp to becoming a wireless ISP," said David
Hagan, president of Boingo Wireless.
For those looking to build a commercial Wi-Fi hotspot, Boingo
Wireless is offering pre-configured Colubris Networks CN3000
Wireless Access Controllers that integrate hotspot access control
functions with an access point.
The Colubris Networks CN3000 works easily "with their
authentication and billing systems," said Barry Fougere,
president and CEO of Colubris Networks.
"With Boingo and Colubris, anyone can install a commercial
Wi-Fi location. Hotspot deployment is now available to the
masses," Fougere said.
In addition, Agere Systems announced that its Smart Access Point
technology will also support Boingo Hot-Spot-in-a-Box functionality
and be easily integrated with the Boingo Wireless network right out
of the box.

MobileInfo.com’s Comments & Advisory: Boingo's
strategy to franchise WiFi hotspots is an excellent business concept but
consumers expect a uniformity of service, technical support and single
billing. Boingo will have to ensure that consumers do not see this as a
loosely-connected wireless local area networks with a super-structure that
does not work uniformly. Until Boingo grows to a respectable size, only
carriers can provide a consistent look ad feel.
