Photo Images Now Being Sent
Between Japan and Korea
Japanese 3G mobile carrier
KDDI Corp. and its South Korean counterpart SK Telecom have launched
a multimedia e-mail service that allows their respective subscribers
to send and receive photo images.
This agreement is an offshoot of the popularity of their
respective CDMA2000 1X network services and compatible 3G handsets.
With a CDMA2000 1x third generation handset purchased from either
carrier, such as Samsung’s X-270 from SK Telecom or Casio’s
A3012CA camera-equipped GPS Keitai from KDDI, subscribers of both
services can send and receive e-mails and still pictures as JPEG
files.
For soccer enthusiasts attending the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan
and South Korea, the multimedia e-mail service would allow them to
send other subscribers pictures of all the action in real-time.
According to the wireless carriers, users of the photo e-mail are
not required to register and do not pay additional fees.
Previously, SK Telecom and KDDI signed a global roaming agreement
that allows users of KDDI’s au GLOBAL PASSPORT to use their mobile
phones in Korea without requiring any special registration. On May
22, SK Telecom began selling a mobile phone that can be used in
Japan and also started full-scale roaming services.

MobileInfo.com’s Comments & Advisory: It
is interesting to see international roaming between compatible 1xRTT CDMA
networks. We expect more and more networks in Asia to have roaming
agreements. But we are still awaiting roaming between Europe and North
America for sub-3G CDMA or GPRS networks.
