Faster, More Powerful Palm OS 5
Now Available to Developers
PalmSource, a subsidiary of
Palm, Inc., has begun shipping the latest version of its operating
system, the Palm OS 5, to licensees and developers.
The Palm OS 5 offers SSL security and multimedia and wireless
enhancements, but the key feature is support for the
highest-performance ARM chips from Intel, Motorola and Texas
Instruments.
"Our goal is to introduce the industry’s best ARM-based
handhelds this fall," said Todd Bradley, president and COO,
Solutions Group, Palm. "With the power of Palm OS 5, Palm
handhelds can deliver a richer multimedia and wireless experience
while preserving the size, weight and battery life users count
on."
New Features in the Palm OS 5
- Enhanced User Interface:
Enhanced icons and fonts provide
support for high-resolution displays and thus greater readability.
- Upgraded Security:
Strong data encryption and SSL services
enable reliable and secure e-mail, Web browsing and m-commerce
transactions.
- Multimedia:
Higher fidelity sound and support for
high-density screens translate into richer multimedia experiences.
- Wireless:
In addition to current support for WAN and
Bluetooth, Palm OS 5 supports 802.11b for connections to wireless
LANs.
Sony’s president of handheld computers, Masanobu Yoshida, has
already stepped forward to endorse the latest Palm operating system,
saying that with the Palm OS 5, its new CLIÉ products will offer
"new dimensions of user experiences, and [the Palm OS 5] is a
great step forward for Palm OS overall."
