TI Unveils Bluetooth Chip for
Under $4
Texas Instruments has
introduced a single chip, the BRF6100, that combines a digital Radio
Frequency (RF) processor and Bluetooth baseband for under $4.
Bluetooth-enabled devices can exchange information and share
resources within a 30-foot range at speeds of 720 Kbps.
For high-end cell phone manufacturers, TI’s BRF6100 chip will
require less than half the power consumption, less space and, most
importantly, it will cost them less to launch a line of
Bluetooth-enabled products. In volumes of one million, a TI
single-chip will cost less than $4 compared with $10 per chip.
According to Michael Wall from Frost and Sullivan, "TI’s
BRF6100 will play a major role in accelerating the current growth of
Bluetooth in cellular products from smart or high-end phones to
mid-range and low end products thanks to the lower cost and process
scalability."
BRF6100 Single Chip Feature Highlights
- Process: 0.13u CMOS
- 25mA peak current consumption
- Integrated RF Switch
- Support 13, 15.36, 16.8, 19.2, 19.44, 19.8, 26, 38.44 (MHz)
- Full throughput from all cellular clocks (723.2 kbps in DH5)
Texas Instrument expects the BRF6100 to be available for sampling
in the fall and in volume production in the first quarter of 2003.

MobileInfo.com’s Comments & Advisory: It
is great to see Bluetooth chip prices come down to this level within two
years of its introduction.
