AirDefense Introduces Enterprise
WLAN Security Product
AirDefense has launched what
it claims to be the first wireless LAN security appliance for the
enterprise.
According to Jay Chaudhry, co-founder of AirDefense, the company’s
patent-pending technology provides a complete WLAN security platform
to monitor and secure WLANs from all unauthorized users.
"WLAN sniffers and scanners now on the market offer very
limited security because they only scan samples and stationary
snapshots of the airwaves," Chaudhry said. "With its state
analysis engine, AirDefense provides 24x7, real-time monitoring of
all WLAN traffic and correlates the data among its multi-dimensional
intrusion detection engine to identify security risks."
Features of AirDefense WLAN Security Solutions
- Deployed on multiple platforms, including rack-mounted servers
and mobile devices
- Managed remotely using a standard Web browser and secure
connection
- WLAN intrusion detection system based on multiple detection
technologies designed for Layer 1 and Layer 2 of 802.11
protocols
- Intrusion detection engine identifies security threats based
on the following:
- Signature verification
- Protocol analysis
- Policy deviations
- Statistical anomalies
AirDefense’s built-in features allow an enterprise to perform
the following:
- Identify security risks, which are then prioritized to alert
the greatest threats
- Maintain 24x7, real-time WLAN monitoring
- Detect intruders and prevent attacks
- Set and enforce WLAN usage policies
- Conduct fault diagnostics and performance analysis
AirDefense received a vote of confidence from Pete Lindstorm,
director of security strategies for Hurwitz Group, when he said,
"Until [the release of AirDefense’s WLAN security solution],
WLAN security solutions lacked a true intrusion detection system
that provided stateful security where every WLAN session is
monitored to guard against session hijacking, spoofing and session
theft."

MobileInfo.com’s Comments & Advisory:
AirDefense does introduce a desirable method of continuous monitoring
of traffic on wireless LANs. In this respect, it is distinct from wireless
LAN packet analysis tools from Network Associates (Sniffer), Network
Instruments (Observer) and Wildackets (Airpeek). Both type of tools have
their place in network supporter's toolkit. See our page
comparing these other tools. Generally, organizations may start with the
latter category of tools but eventually will switch to AirDefense type
operational monitoring tools. More enlightened users may, on the other hand,
bypass non-continuous monitoring tools and invest their effort in long term
operational tools. Please note that there are differences in functionality
and type of problems both sets of tools solve. Be prepared to spend more
time in installing and supporting AirDefense as compared to the other
category of tools.
