PDA Users Get Sneak Previews of
NBC Shows
Not satisfied with just
relying on the conventional marketing approaches — 15- or
30-second commercial spots or entertainment reviews — to get the
word out about its new line-up of fall shows, broadcast giant NBC
has turned to multi-media content provider Mazingo to deliver
three-minute clips of five of its new shows to handheld users.
PDA users can download Mazingo software for free from its Web
site, allowing them access to over 1,200 channels of multimedia and
video content. Each time the PDA is synchronized on its cradle,
content is automatically delivered to the Mazingo channels.
While NBC video clips of such upcoming show as ‘"In-Laws,"
"Hidden Hills," and "Good Morning Miami" are
free, most of Mazingo’s content is subscription-based.
The San Francisco-based company has 50,000 users and about 500
subscribers that NBC hopes to reach and awaken their curiosity just
enough that they will want to see the entire show on a much larger
screen.
Being the first of the major networks to employ mobile marking,
NBC is paving the way for others to follow, according to Carmine
Gallo, vice president of channel development for Mazingo.
"For the first time, a major TV network can automatically
deliver video to mobile users via PDAs," said Gallo, which
"is an indicator of what consumers can expect in the near
future."
Mazingo also recently signed deals with the Weather Channel to
provide live weather updates and with USAToday to provide both text
and video newscasts, Gallo told Wireless NewsFactor.
