U.K. Lab Expands to Test Usability
of New Mobile Phones
Mobile phone vendors, from
manufacturers to content providers, are taking the user experience
very seriously, according to 3GLab who has just announced the
expansion of its U.K. testing facility to meet the needs of its
growing client base.
One year after opening, 3GLab’s Cambridge facility has doubled
in size to accommodate the company’s growing workforce and to
house a new mobile phone usability-testing suite.
Equipped with two-way mirrors and hidden cameras, the new suite
will enable vendors to test mobile phone applications by observing
consumers actually using the devices. The company said it will
recruit individuals to take part in user experience testing so that
clients can monitor how these users interact with new technology
before it is launched commercially.
Wireless vendors can test the usability of their devices using
3GLab’s user interface products, Trigenix and Appcelerata.
According to Steve Ives, CEO of 3GLab, these products "are
totally geared to design and deliver applications to mobile
phones."
With the "latest generation of color mobile phones now in
the shops," Ives said, "users will demand well-designed
applications and services that make the best use of these
devices."
"Our clients believe that ultimately, the usability of a
mobile phone’s user interface will determine a service’s success
or failure," he added.

MobileInfo.com’s Comments & Advisory:
This is a very useful facility. We encourage more facilities like this
and more vendors to try testing their applications before launching them.
