Two Notable Demonstrations of Next Generation Technology

Two notable demonstrations, with commercial implications, were successfully completed: the first, an international mobile phone with video capabilities roaming between IMT-2000 mobile networks in South Korea and Japan, and the second, the exchange of a multimedia message (MMS) between a CDMA2000 and GPRS network.

International Video Phone Call
A company executive from the South Korean carrier KT ICOM and one from its Japanese counterpart J-Phone made voice and video calls back and forth between IMT-2000 networks in South Korea and Japan.

LG Electronics supplied both parties with a IMT-2000 mobile phone, with video telephony and roaming capabilities.

According to KT ICOM, voice conversations were clear and visuals were of good quality.

"This is a start of what IMT-2000 can offer to customers, a differentiated roaming service with extended capabilities," said Dr. Yeon-Hak Kim, vice president of corporate planning for KT ICOM. "KT ICOM plans to provide international roaming service for not only voice but also video and data roaming capabilities and eventually offering virtual home environment as the ultimate roaming service."

MMS Exchange between a CDMA2000 and GPRS Network
At the recent 3G World Congress in Hong Kong, Ericsson demonstrated what it calls a ‘cross-technology multimedia messaging service’ (MMS) between a CDMA2000 and GPRS network.

The demonstration involved sending a multimedia message from a CDMA2000-enabled PDA to a GPRS terminal. The success of this exchange addresses the problem of MMS interoperability, which is of great importance to mobile carriers hoping to launch MMS by the end of the year.

MobileInfo.com’s Comments & Advisory:  These are interesting pilots that prove limits of technology. International and cross network roaming are important but bulk of consumer demand will come from local areas.
