Sun preparing newest version of J2ME

Sun Microsystems and its partners are currently testing the newest version of Java for mobile devices, commonly called J2ME. The newest version includes a standardized method to download Java programs, better sound and networking, and a more sophisticated user interface. Those new features are important not only because they'll expand the types of programs that can run on J2ME-enabled phones, but because they may help prevent cell phone makers from creating their own ways of processing these tasks. Some experts, however, fear that any limitations on Java's flexibility, such as those being planned for the newest Java release, could kill the platform's appeal to developers, and strengthen the position of Java rivals such as Microsoft and Qualcomm's BREW.
