Nokia and IBM Offer Wireless Operators A Digital Content Delivery Solution

Two heavyweights in the mobile industry Nokia and IBM have combined forces to offer wireless operators and service providers a complete solution for the management and delivery of new content services to mobile subscribers.

The solution, called Digital Media for Mobile Devices, combines the Nokia Delivery Server with IBM Digital Media Factory framework and enables customers to offer new mobile content services including:

  • Java based mobile games
  • Polyphonic MIDI ring tones
  • Digital images
  • Graphics
  • Screen savers and icons

Under the terms of the agreement, IBM will market Nokia’s delivery server software for mobile content downloading. The companies have also agreed to collaborate on secure content delivery solutions, including digital rights management, according to industry-wide open standards and specifications.

As part of IBM’s Digital Media Factory framework, which is based on several IBM products, the Nokia Delivery Server software will be integrated with IBM’s Service Provider Delivery Environment, an open standards based framework built on IBM’s WebSphere e-business infrastructure software. It is designed to give wireless and wireline service providers the flexibility to introduce voice, text, and Internet-based services faster, easier and at a lower cost.

In addition, the Nokia Delivery Server will be ported and made available for use on IBM Linux-based e-server xSeries.

IBM Global Services will be responsible for selling and providing consulting, installation and integration services.

MobileInfo Advisory & Comments: This is a powerful combination of expertise and products between industry's largest players. IBM is interested in selling its WebSphere application server framework and Nokia is interested in selling its mobile content Delivery Server software. Nokia needs IBM (or its competitors such as Sun and Oracle) to provide a complete solution to wireless service providers. IBM needs to include a content delivery server software (which it does not have) in its offering. It should be win-win solution for the two companies and a best-of-breed, though more expensive and complex solution for carriers. Expense and complexity may be worth it for a well-integrated solution.
