WHSmith starts selling e-books in palm Reader format through its
website
16 July 2002 -- WHSmith, a large book retailer in UK and Canada,
will start selling e-books in Palm Reader format through its
web-site. The retailer is working with digital rights clearing
house OverDrive to implement the new capabilities. Users will
be able to purchase over 4000 titles from publishers such as
HarperCollins, Random House, Simon & Schuster, McGraw-Hill, St.
Martin's Press and Time Warner. Palm Reader is a freely
available application developed by Palm Digital Media and is
compatible with Palm OS and Pocket PC handhelds. Users pay a
fee for each book, which is encrypted for each individual purchase.
MobileInfo Advisory & Comments: This is an early
effort by retailers to sell e-books that can be read on Palm
handheld devices. Technology is there but real issue is consumer
habits. Our educated guess is that only the new generation will take
to e-books.
