APPLICATIONS & DEVELOPMENTS

Wireless Service Brings Location-Sensitive Ads to Cabs

toMarket, a Toronto-based company, has equipped 25 cabs with a wireless service that provides location-sensitive information. A screen attached to the back of the headrest of the front passenger seat can display a map of the route a cab is taking to its destination. But it also displays advertising for businesses as a cab passes them. The businesses buy the city block on which they are located, and ad video is stored in a computer in the cab's trunk. A GPS signal lets the computer know that the cab is driving on the business' block, and the ad comes on the screen. Some companies have bought city blocks where competitors are located, so their ads play as the competition is passed. toMarket plans to have 2,000 cabs equipped with the service by March 2003.
