Intel Planning Mobile Media Handheld

Intel next week plans to announce a new mobile media player with WLAN Internet access. The plans are for a reference design Intel plans to release to OEMs. The device will be the size of a paperback book and downloads content from a PC via a USB 2.0 port or through 802.11b networking technology. The device would include an Intel XScale processor, hard drive and liquid crystal display. The devices are expected to be available from manufacturers next year for about $400.

MobileInfo Advisory & Comments: Mobile media (for consumer entertainment) handheld device does have a legitimate market. We are not sure Intel is the right company to create the reference design. If Intel focused on the hardware and processor part of this device and let third parties do the form factor and integration with entertainment pieces, we shall have a better and perhaps more acceptable device.
