IPWireless and Wireless House to Develop PCMCIA Broadband Modem
Card
IPWireless, a next-generation wireless broadband company, has
announced its partnership with Wireless House, a mobile
communications technology firm, to develop the IPWireless PCMCIA
broadband modem card.
The PCMCIA card promises mobile data users the ultimate in
uninterrupted broadband access anywhere in the world, the two
companies said. Conventional UMTS systems use frequency-division
duplex (FDD) or "paired" spectrum, whereas the IPWireless
system operates over time-division duplex (TDD) or
"unpaired" spectrum. Data-only TDD systems are more
spectrally efficient than FDD systems, because they use one channel
for both up- and down-stream traffic rather than two.
The jointly developed PCMCIA card marks the fist in a series of
innovative devices to be developed by the two companies that will
seamlessly integrate universal mobile telecommunications service
(UMTS) connectivity into mobile devices, namely laptops and PDAs.
"Tomorrow’s laptops and PDAs will be ‘IPWireless enabled’,"
remarked Chris Gilbert, CEO of IPWireless, "so that everyone
will be able to enjoy a user-friendly experience of high-speed
Internet access wherever they are — just as we enjoy with cell
phones today."
IPWireless has built its reputation on the IPWireless Advanced 3G
Broadband solution. Based on UMTS TDD (TD-CDMA) standards, it allows operators
to deliver a range of wireless broadband services through a single
network.
The IPWireless PCMCIA modem card will be available in early 2003.

MobileInfo Advisory & Comments: We do not think
that this will drastically change the 3G scene but this should help
in UMTS 3G deployment.
