City of Burlington, N.C. Dedicates New Motorola Shared Communications System

Burlington, N.C. Aug. 20, 2002 — The city of Burlington, N.C. today held a special dedication ceremony to formally accept its $4.4 million Motorola 800MHz mixed-mode ASTRO® Digital SmartZone® communications system. The new radio system is part of Motorola’s extensive portfolio of integrated communications and information solutions to address mission-critical public safety and security requirements worldwide.

An expansion of the Guilford County/Greensboro 25-channel 800 MHz SmartZone simulcast system, the new communications capability increases the shared system capacity by three channels and has added one new dispatch site in Burlington to the four already in operation, significantly increasing the shared system’s coverage footprint.

“This represents the first time our three jurisdictions have worked together in an effort to share communications resources,” said Gary Hicks, Public Works Director for Burlington. “The added coverage and interoperability between agencies will significantly impact the quality and speed of police and fire response in all three jurisdictions and provide for future growth.”

Guilford County, Greensboro and Burlington police and fire departments will utilize the expanded system, which will serve a population of more than a half million people. The Burlington system will utilize 93 ASTRO® SPECTRA® radios, 210 XTS3000™ mobile radios and 42 XTS vehicular adapters. In addition, the new Burlington dispatch site will feature a 4-Position Gold Elite™ dispatch console.

“The new regional system will allow us to each maintain independent operations, with the added capability of communicating across jurisdictions as necessary,” said Hicks. “Sharing the system and its maintenance will significantly reduce operating costs in the short and long term.”

“We were pleased to assist in the development of a regional communications solution that will meet the coverage and interoperability needs of all public safety agencies in the area well into the future,” said Mark Moon, Motorola Communications and Electronics, Inc. Vice President and Director of Operations, Southern Division. “Their collective cooperation played a significant role in the system’s timely expansion and implementation and serves as a model for other jurisdictions to emulate.”

MobileInfo Advisory & Comments:  Motorola has supplied hundreds of private public (we mean the combination of private public) safety networks across the globe.

On a different but associated note, we believe that public safety networks should be dedicated and highly protected, inter-agency cooperation should be encouraged. The ball in this case is not in vendor's court but our local legislators and politicians. We would get better bang for our tax dollars if we pursue common public safety networks in a state, province or a region rather than an individual county or municipality. Local police officials will complain because they may loose some power and the effort may become unwieldy, but it is worth all the trouble. Do you want to make any comments on this?
