Congress Moves to Secure Bus Transportation, Greyhound Executive Says
U.S. bus transportation services need more funding for emergency communications, passenger screening, surveillance, driver protection and security at terminals, Rick Richards, chief information officer for Greyhound Lines Inc., said Friday. Richards said Greyhound has improved security since September 11, 2001, but much more needs to be done. Drivers now have cell phones, but Greyhound does not have Global Positioning System technology to locate buses. Also, screening and security measures vary from terminal to terminal. Congress approved $3.85 billion to improve aviation security, and approved $15 million this year for improvements to intercity bus systems. Sen. Max Cleland (D-Ga.) and some House transportation committee members are supporting legislation that would authorize $200 million for improvements to intercity bus security. But Congress faces a tight schedule for considering such funding. The fiscal year ends September 30, and the 107th Congress is scheduled for adjournment October 4. (Source: AP)

MobileInfo Comments and Advisory: We
need more active support in improving security for the
transportation industry. Providing 15 million for inter-city
transportation as compared to 3.85 billion for the aviation industry
is disproportionate.
