JAVA[tm] TECHNOLOGY ENHANCES SUPPORT FOR MESSAGING, GRAPHICS, VIDEO AND AUDIO TO MOBILE DEVICES - New Technologies Will Drive Next Generation Wireless Applications In Handheld and Wireless Devices

SANTA CLARA, CA and YOKOHAMA, JAPAN -- September 24, 2002 -- Sun Microsystems today announced that the Java[tm] platform is adding new technologies that support enhanced messaging, graphics, video, audio and security features for mobile devices. These new technologies will bring increased functionality, more robust applications and a better user experience to future generations of cell phones, digital assistants and other mobile devices.

Nineteen of the world's top handset manufacturers today offer eighty different Java technology powered phones, and the new technologies will extend the Java platform's lead as a technology of choice for cell phones and mobile devices.

"Java technology continues to be the leading platform for advanced mobile devices," said Alan Brenner, vice president, Consumer and Mobile Systems Group, Sun Microsystems. "Updating MIDP and adding new media and messaging capabilities to J2ME will help to ensure that the Java platform continues to provide the most robust environment for delivering new applications and services to mobile devices."

The new advances in Java technology are contained in three new standards completed by the Java Community Process(sm) for mobile devices using the Java[tm] 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME[tm]):

  • Version 2.0 of the Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP 2.0) which delivers a wide variety of enhancements to update MIDP, the base collection of Java technologies for mobile handsets. See jcp.org/jsr/detail/118.jsp
  • The Mobile Media API (MMAPI) which delivers the specifications and code for providing new audio, video and multimedia capabilities. See java.sun.com/products/mmapi/
  • Wireless Messaging API (WMA) which delivers the underlying technology for improved messaging capabilities, including short message service (SMS).

MobileInfo Comments and Advisory:  Java has become the defacto development standard for handheld devices, especially mobile phones. There are JVMs (Java Virtual Machines) available for all of the handheld OS platforms. It is fitting that Sun is upgrading J2ME with mobile media and wireless messaging enhancements.
