Lumentis Supplies Metropolitan DWDM Network to Hi3G in Sweden
STOCKHOLM-September 30, 2002-Lumentis AB and Hi3G, a 3G company offering
mobile multimedia services, announce the successful implementation of
Lumentis' carrier-class DWDM system for Hi3G's Swedish 3G network. This
proves Lumentis' ability to satisfy carriers' main concerns today when
selecting new equipment - reducing initial and total capital expenditures
(CAPEX) as well as operational expenditures (OPEX).
By deploying Lumentis' DWDM equipment, Hi3G will have a smooth upgrade
path for higher capacity as well as the ability to evolve its 3G-network
into future architectures and to offer multi-service transport. Lumentis
is also delivering the network management system that supports CORBA
standard with full service and support for the future growth of the network. Hi3G now has the ability to upgrade its network in a flexible
way to adapt to the growing traffic patterns created in 3G networks.
"Hi3G selected us because the Lumentis system is easy to implement and
enables the customer to expand the network as needed without incurring a
lot of new costs," said Pär Johanson, Director of Marketing and Sales at
Lumentis. "As the traditional telecom market faces a deep downturn, we
are experiencing a significant increase in requests for new deployments
of metropolitan network solutions."
Lumentis' solution is already in operation as a part of Hi3G's implementation of the Stockholm 3G network. The DWDM network is based on
a ring configuration for the hubbing of base station traffic into the
central switch location. Lumentis' SDH/SONET Muxponders are also used
for introducing a new transport concept which allows traditional equipment layers to be eliminated. This simplifies the mobile transport
architecture resulting in lower operational expenses and lower transmission costs. The basis of this network is a common platform for
further expansion to a larger number of nodes and wavelength capacity on
the ring and with spur extensions to locations outside the ring.
"The long-term agreement with Hi3G clearly demonstrates that our new
solutions are breaking ground where traditional Metro DWDM previously
was not economically feasible. By combining cost benefits similar with
that of CWDM with the scalability and quality-of-service of DWDM in the
same system, Lumentis can present a whole new business case for mobile
and fixed network operators. We are seeing rapid changes in the industry
and the requirements are not the same as they were a few years ago,"
said Anders Lundberg, CEO of Lumentis. "Hi3G and Hutchinson Whampoa are
well-positioned to take hold of the 3G marketplace, and we are enthusiastic about the possibilities and new opportunities this will
present for Lumentis."
ABOUT Hi3G
Hi3G´s ambition is to become the leader in the Scandinavian 3G market.
The company has Swedish and Danish 3G licenses and will offer attractive
and innovative mobile multimedia services. The company is owned by Hutchison Whampoa (60%) and Investor AB
(40%). Hi3G
is building its customer offering together with other Hutchison Whampoa
companies that hold 3G licenses in Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong
Kong, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
ABOUT LUMENTIS AB
Lumentis designs, develops and delivers metro DWDM solutions for cities
and regional optical networks that combine the capacity of amplified
networks with the CAPEX and OPEX advantages of un-amplified networks. A
new and innovative system architecture that eliminates the need for amplifiers, combines cost benefits similar with that of CWDM with the
scalability and quality-of-service of DWDM into one single platform.
This minimizes entry cost, maximizes network utilization and allows
DWDM-based metro networks to be implemented where it was previously not
economically feasible. In addition, Lumentis offers its Multi-Dimensional Scalability (MDS) concept that manages network size
and topology, capacity growth, wavelength routing, integrated SDH/SONET
capabilities, and open management solutions. The privately held company
was founded in September 2000 and is backed by Deutsche Bank Industrial
Holdings AG and SANTEC Corporation, Japan, which provides the company
with solid and long-term financing.
