Does Recent Lotus Announcement Tell us Something About Mobile Computing Meat & Potatoes?
About a month back, there was news of a major new upgrade of Notes, the widely deployed
enterprise e-mail platform from IBM. In more high-flying times, the
focus may have been on flash collaboration and instant messaging apps.
And make no mistake, those advances are there. But IBM chose to focus
on the meat-and-potatoes: delivering better system performance, supporting more users per server, and outlining new technology to stop
spam, which in turn frees system resources. Enterprises can always
turn to pure Internet-based mail; but commercial systems like Notes can focus on the real needs of IT managers. Scott Cooper, senior vice
president, Lotus Software worldwide at IBM, cut to the chase:
"Customers need more productivity [and] more users per server." Read
all about the new Notes. --Richard Karpinski (rkarpins@cmp.com) co-editor, InternetWeek NewsBreak
